Celebrating Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is almost here, and it got me thinking about how we're going to celebrate this year. It’s always been a special time, but this year feels a little different. For years now, my closest friends and I have carried on a tradition of celebrating Valentine’s Day together with a couple's retreat. Our first trip took us to Blue Ridge, GA, and from there, it became a yearly tradition. We’ve returned to those mountains again and again, each year trying a new cabin, soaking in the breathtaking views, exploring the nature around us, and spending quality time together.
The retreat has always been more than just a getaway—it’s been a chance to recharge, reconnect, and reflect on the love and friendship we share. But last year, something changed. We lost our best friend, the one who helped create this tradition with me. Her absence still feels unreal and heartbreaking. It’s hard to imagine continuing our tradition without her by my side.
This year, we’re carrying on the retreat, but with a heavy heart. As we gather with friends and head to the cabin, I’ll be holding Barb close in my thoughts. I know she’ll be with us in spirit, and I’ll carry her memory in everything we do this week.
Barb, I love you and miss you deeply. Your light still shines in my heart.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy Valentine's Day, filled with love, reflection, and cherished memories. And for those of you looking for ways to celebrate, here are some fun ideas:
Cook a Fancy Dinner Together – Pick a recipe you’ve never tried before and enjoy the process of cooking and dining together.
Create a Scavenger Hunt – Design a personalized scavenger hunt with clues leading to meaningful places or items in your relationship.
Take a Virtual Trip – If travel isn’t possible, explore a new destination virtually by watching documentaries, taking online tours, or trying international dishes.
Couple’s Spa Day – Pamper each other with massages, facemasks, and relaxing baths at home.
Movie Marathon with a Twist – Pick a genre, actor, or theme and have a movie marathon with themed snacks to match.
Write Love Letters to Each Other – Take some quiet time to write heartfelt letters, then read them aloud to one another.
DIY Wine or Chocolate Tasting – Get a selection of wines or chocolates and taste-test them together, rating your favorites.
Stargazing or Night Picnic – Enjoy a romantic stargazing evening outside or set up a cozy indoor picnic.
Take a Dance Class Together – Whether it’s salsa, swing, or just a slow dance, learn something new and fun together.
Create a Memory Jar – Write down your favorite memories together on small notes and place them in a jar to open on future special occasions.
May your Valentine’s Day be filled with love, laughter, and beautiful memories!
